Record Snow in Texas and the Reason why we use Ice and Water Shield in Texas
Record breaking snow today with Baytown’s snow accumulation of 5.5 inches, Beaumont reporting 6 inches, Houston reporting a range of two to four inches, and Lake Charles just shy of five inches of snow. National Weather Service data shows Houston having 3-inch snowfall on winter days in 1940 and 1960. And Houston received 20 inches of snow on February 14, 1895.
Many home owners were looking at each others roof tops today and wondering if the roofing products used in their roof installation will protect them from any snow related roof damage.
Many of the roof replacements we've completed will be safeguarded from snow-related roof damage thanks to the ice and water shield.
What is ice and water shield you may ask?
Ice and water shield protector is used on roofs to provide an extra layer of protection against water infiltration, particularly in areas prone to cold temperatures and heavy rainfall or snow.
If you are installing a new roof, ice and water protector is not always a required material. In many northern areas of the United States and Canada, ice and water protector is necessary and mandated by building codes. In some southern states, building code authorities do not require ice and water protector. However, even where it is not mandated, ice and water protector offers many advantages to help protect your roof.
At Bay Flats Roofing and Construction it is customary that we install ice and water shield protector on low pitch roofs, in roof valleys, around all roof penetrations including chimneys along with synthetic underlayment. Many of the roof replacements we've completed will be safeguarded from snow-related damage thanks to the ice and water shield. Give us a call for your roof repair or replaement.
Here are the main reasons for using it:
Waterproofing: It acts as a waterproof barrier, providing additional protection against leaks caused by rain, wind-driven snow, or ice. This is especially important in valleys, roof penetrations (like chimneys or vents), and other vulnerable areas.
Protects against Wind-driven Rain: The adhesive backing of the ice and water shield ensures it stays in place even under high wind conditions, preventing rain from getting underneath the roofing materials.
Extend Roof Lifespan: By reducing the risk of water damage to the underlying structure, the ice and water shield helps prolong the life of the roof and the home’s interior.
Code Requirements: In many regions, building codes mandate the use of ice and water shield in certain areas of the roof, like along the eaves and in valleys, to ensure long-term durability and minimize water damage.
Overall, it enhances the performance of the roof, protecting your home from potential water damage caused by harsh weather conditions.
Please note that when replacing your roof with general construction workers, ice and water shield is an optional upgrade and not required by Texas building code. Your contractor or handyman may opt for the basic materials, such as felt, instead of synthetic underlayment, and may not make the extra effort to purchase ice and water shield to provide additional protection for your home.
